Buying guide
Woven mats handle warm plates but not a pot straight off the flame — use a trivet for that. Shake crumbs out rather than brushing them into the weave, and wipe spills promptly instead of soaking, since woven material does not respond well to being drenched. Store them flat and stacked; rolled storage makes woven edges curl and they do not flatten again. Allow about 60cm of table edge per setting so mats do not touch. Natural tones age better than bright colours, which fade unevenly in sunlight over a few years.
