This is a 2 litre hot water bottle: fill it with hot water, close the stopper and it gives off steady, gentle heat for hours with no plug, no power and no running cost. It is the simplest way to take the chill off a bed on a cold Nairobi or Limuru night, to keep your feet warm under a blanket, or to hold against your tummy when period cramps hit. The ribbed surface spreads the warmth evenly and stops it feeling scalding against the skin, and the screw-top stopper keeps the water where it belongs. It is a favourite for students in chilly hostels, older relatives who feel the cold, anyone nursing a stiff back or a sore neck, and new mums. Because it needs nothing but a kettle, it keeps working through power cuts, which makes it a sensible thing to have in every home. Colours as pictured.

Buying guide
Never fill a hot water bottle with boiling water straight from the kettle. Let the kettle stand for a minute or two, or mix in a little cold water, then fill it only about two-thirds full. Hold the bottle upright and squeeze gently to push out the remaining air before you screw the stopper on tight, which stops it bulging and makes it lie flat against you. Always place it inside a cover, a towel or a pillowcase rather than directly on bare skin, especially for children and older people. Empty it after use, hang it upside down to drain and dry, and store it away from direct sun. Check the neck and stopper for cracks before each cold season and replace the bottle if it ever looks perished or leaks.
How it compares
An electric heating pad gives controllable heat but needs a socket, costs power and is no use during an outage. A hot water bottle warms up in the time it takes to boil a kettle, is completely silent and portable, and moves from bed to sofa to office chair. For targeted warmth on cramps, feet or a sore back it is the cheaper and simpler choice.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it stay warm?
Filled two-thirds with hot water and wrapped in a cover or towel, it typically stays comfortably warm for several hours, long enough to warm a bed and see you to sleep.
Can I use boiling water?
No. Let the water cool slightly off the boil before filling. Boiling water shortens the life of the bottle and increases the risk of burns.
Does it come with a cover?
The bottle is shown without a cover. Wrap it in a towel, pillowcase or knitted cover so it never sits directly on bare skin.
Can I choose the colour?
Colours are as pictured and depend on stock. Tell us your preferred colour when ordering and we will match it where possible.
