Flat striped cotton sheets in 6x6, in white, cream or grey. A flat sheet is the one that fits any mattress: no elastic to stretch out, no corner that pops off at 3am on a deep pillow-top. Tuck it properly and it stays, which is exactly why hotels have never moved away from them.

Buying guide
Tuck the foot and sides with a hospital corner — fold, lift, tuck — and the sheet will not come loose overnight. A flat sheet suits thick or unusual mattresses where a fitted sheet strains. Iron the top edge only if you want the crisp fold-over look; the rest of the sheet is under a duvet anyway.
How it compares
Against a fitted sheet, a flat sheet fits any depth of mattress and takes slightly more skill to make up. Against a plain flat sheet, the woven stripe gives it texture. Against a full set, this is the piece to buy when your pillowcases and cover are still good.
