This 800ml glass French press brews rich, full-bodied coffee at home in about four minutes, with no machine and no paper filters. Add coarse ground coffee, pour in hot water, wait three to five minutes and press the plunger: the stainless steel mesh filter holds back the grounds and lets the natural oils through, which is what gives French press coffee its smooth, cafΓ©-style taste. At 800ml, it makes three to four mugs, enough for a slow weekend breakfast or a morning with visitors. The clear glass carafe has measurement markings so you can see exactly how much you are brewing, and it sits in a polished steel frame that protects it. The wooden lid and handle stay cool to touch and give it a warm, natural look on the table. It works just as well for loose-leaf tea, and makes a lovely gift for coffee lovers who are tired of instant.

Buying guide
The grind makes or breaks French press coffee: use coarse ground coffee, about the texture of rough sugar, because fine powder slips through the mesh and turns the cup muddy and bitter. Allow one rounded tablespoon per cup, pour water just off the boil, stir, and steep for three to five minutes before pressing slowly. Pour all the coffee out once pressed, since leaving it on the grounds makes it bitter. To clean, scoop out the grounds into the bin rather than the sink, then unscrew and rinse the mesh filter. Wipe the wooden lid and handle rather than soaking them, and never put a cold glass carafe straight onto a hot surface.
How it compares
Compared with instant coffee, a French press gives far richer flavour from real ground beans for very little extra effort. Compared with a drip machine, it needs no electricity or paper filters and is easy to store. The trade-off is a little sediment at the bottom of the cup, which many coffee lovers actually prefer.
