The 40W maximum is a real limit, not a suggestion — overlamping a small enclosed fitting traps heat and shortens the life of both the bulb and the fitting. With LED that is no restriction at all, since a 7W LED comfortably exceeds what a 40W incandescent gave. Choose a clear or filament-style bulb so the cut glass has something to refract; a frosted bulb mutes the whole effect. Brushed brass ages gracefully and hides marks, but keep polish away from it — a dry cloth is all it needs. Mount in pairs for symmetry, at around 150cm in circulation spaces. Wiring by a qualified electrician, with the switch position agreed beforehand.
