Philips LED Solar Wall Light 50 Lumen - 0.32W Compact Entrance and Balcony Light - BWS010 — WIMU Kitchen Nairobi

Philips LED Solar Wall Ligh...

Not every outdoor light needs to flood a compound. This Philips BWS010 puts out 50 lumens from just 0.32W — a marker light rather than a floodlight, and that is exactly the point. It shows where a step, a gate or a doorway is without glaring into a bedroom window or annoying a neighbour, which is what oversized security lighting does to a small compound. The integrated rechargeable battery charges from daylight and runs it after sunset with no wiring, no trench and nothing added to your bill. Because it is genuinely compact, it suits the places a bigger fitting looks wrong: a balcony rail, a narrow entrance, the side of a garden wall, a stairwell. Buy several and space them along a path — a run of low lights reads far better than one bright one.

Buying guide

Lumens are the number to shop on, and most people buy far too many. Fifty lumens marks a position — it tells you where the step is and makes a doorway visible, but it will not light a face or deter anyone. That is the right choice for balconies, narrow entrances and decorative wall runs where a brighter light would glare. If you want to actually see the ground you are walking on, step up to the 100-lumen version; if you want to light a whole compound or driveway, go to 300 lumens or the Nysil security light. The other rule with any solar light is placement: it needs several hours of direct daylight on the panel, so a fitting under a deep eave or in a wall's shadow will be dim by 9pm regardless of specification. Wipe the panel every few weeks — dust and rain spotting are the usual reason solar lights fade over months. Space multiples about 2 to 3 metres apart for an even run.

How it compares

Against the 100-lumen BWS010, this is half the output and better suited to marking rather than illuminating. Compared with the 300-lumen model, that is a genuine area light while this is an accent. Against the Vynce and Vapora decorative wall lights at 200 lumens, those are chosen for their styling as much as their light; this is the plain, low-cost functional option. Against a mains wall light, no wiring and no running cost, at the price of depending on how much sun the panel gets.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50 lumens bright enough?
It is a marker light — enough to show where a step, gate or doorway is, not enough to light a face or an area. For walking light choose the 100-lumen version; for a compound, the 300-lumen model or the Nysil security light.

Does it need wiring?
No. It charges from daylight into an integrated rechargeable battery and runs after sunset, so there is no cable to run and nothing added to your electricity bill.

Why would it get dimmer over time?
Usually a dusty or rain-spotted panel rather than a failing battery. Wipe the panel every few weeks, and make sure it is not mounted in the shadow of a wall or under a deep eave.
