Philips LED Solar Wall Light with PIR Motion Sensor and RGBW Colour 100 Lumen - BWC025 T1 — WIMU Kitchen Nairobi

Philips LED Solar Wall Ligh...

Two lights in one fitting, and the cheapest way here to get motion sensing. The Philips BWC025 T1 pairs a PIR motion sensor with RGBW colour lighting at 100 lumens — so it sits quietly in a colour of your choosing for atmosphere, then responds when something moves. That combination is genuinely useful at a gate or side entrance: decorative when nobody is there, attention-drawing when someone is. Because the sensor means it is not running at full output all evening, the battery goes further than the raw lumen figure suggests. It runs entirely on solar, so there is no wiring for either function. Suits entrances, pathways, balconies and garden walls. At this price it is the easy way to add a motion-triggered light without an electrician anywhere near the job.

Buying guide

Motion sensing changes what a solar light is for. A continuously-on light gives you ambience and wayfinding; a PIR light gives you a signal that someone is there, and conserves battery the rest of the night. Decide which you actually want, because a PIR light on a path you walk constantly becomes irritating, while a continuous light at a rarely-used side gate is wasted. Mount it where the sensor covers the approach rather than the destination — sensors trigger on movement across their field of view better than movement straight towards them. Check the detection height too: too high and it misses people, too low and it triggers on cats. RGBW is a genuine feature rather than a gimmick if you want a coloured accent, but bear in mind that coloured light is dimmer than white at the same power. Panel exposure and monthly cleaning still determine performance, as with every solar fitting.

How it compares

Against the BWC055 T1, that is the brighter, more substantial version of the same idea at roughly two and a half times the price. Compared with the Shroud SR clear and frosted models, those pair PIR with 225 lumens and a more decorative housing. Against the non-sensor BWC025 T3, this adds motion sensing and colour but loses the simple always-on warm glow. Against a mains security light, no wiring and no bill, though a mains fitting will be far brighter.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I mount it for the sensor to work well?
Where the sensor sees movement crossing its field of view rather than coming straight at it — PIR sensors detect crossing motion far better. Mount at a height that catches people but not cats.

Does the colour lighting reduce brightness?
Coloured light is dimmer than white at the same power, which is normal for any RGBW fitting. Use white when you want maximum visibility and colour for accent.

Should I choose PIR or an always-on light?
PIR suits gates and side entrances where you want a signal that someone is there. For a path you walk all evening, an always-on light like the BWS010 range is less irritating.
