Solid-colour cotton duvet cover sets in 5 by 6 and 6 by 6. A plain cover is the most flexible bedding you can own: it sits under any curtain, next to any headboard, and lets cushions or a throw do the decorating when you feel like changing the room without changing the bedding.

Buying guide
Match the cover to your duvet measurement rather than the bed frame. Plain covers show creases more than patterned ones — line dry, smooth it onto the bed, and iron only if you want the crisp hotel finish. For a rental, two covers in the same colour keeps laundry and replacement simple.
How it compares
Against a patterned cover, plain gives flexibility and never dates. Against microfibre, cotton breathes better on a warm night. Against a full bedding set, a cover alone is the cheaper refresh when your sheets are still good.
