An air cooler does something a fan cannot: it actually lowers the air temperature. Water in the 3.5-litre tank evaporates as air passes through, and evaporation absorbs heat — so the air arriving at you is genuinely cooler, not just moving. The Sanford SF8127PAC does that on only 80W, a fraction of what an air conditioner draws, with no installation, no gas and no fitting a unit through a wall. Its bladeless design is safer around children and easier to clean than a bladed fan, and it gives a smoother airflow. Three speeds and four wind modes let you choose between steady air and a more natural varying breeze, and the LED temperature display shows you the room temperature rather than leaving you guessing.

Buying guide
Understand how evaporative cooling works before buying, because it explains both the appeal and the limit. Water evaporating into the airstream absorbs heat, which genuinely lowers the temperature — but the drier the air, the better it works. In dry heat it is excellent; in very humid coastal conditions the effect is much weaker. Ventilation matters too: leave a window or door slightly open so humidity does not simply build up in a sealed room. At 80W it costs a fraction of an air conditioner to run and needs no installation, which is the practical case for it. Fill with clean water, empty and dry the tank when not in use for a few days, and clean the filter regularly, since a damp filter left standing is where smells and mould develop. Some models allow ice in the tank for a stronger effect; check the manual before doing so.
How it compares
Against a fan, this lowers the air temperature rather than only moving air — a real difference in dry heat. Compared with an air conditioner, it uses a small fraction of the power, needs no installation and can be wheeled between rooms, but cannot match an AC's cooling or work as well in high humidity. Against a bladed fan, bladeless is safer around children and easier to clean. Against a tower fan, this cools rather than circulates.
Frequently asked questions
Does it really cool the air, or just move it?
It genuinely cools — water evaporating into the airstream absorbs heat. The effect is strongest in dry heat and much weaker in very humid coastal conditions.
How does it compare with an air conditioner?
It uses a small fraction of the power, needs no installation and can be moved between rooms, but it cannot match an AC's cooling and works less well in high humidity.
How do I stop it developing a smell?
Use clean water, empty and dry the tank if you are not using it for a few days, and clean the filter regularly. A damp filter left standing is where mould develops.
