A portable solar light with built-in panels: leave it in the sun during the day and it lights a campsite, a backyard gathering or a blackout at night. No cells to buy, no cable to find — which is exactly why it belongs in an emergency kit as much as a camping box.

Buying guide
Put it in direct sun, not on a shaded windowsill — that is where most solar disappointment comes from. Charge it whenever it is idle so it is ready for an unexpected outage. Use the lowest useful brightness to stretch a partial charge through a longer evening.
How it compares
Against a battery lantern, solar needs no cells and costs nothing to run, but depends on sunshine. Against a rechargeable lamp, it charges without mains power — which matters during long outages. Against a torch, it lights a space rather than a beam.
