Appliance Wattage & Your KPLC Units: What Uses What

Kenyan homes run on 240 V, and KPLC bills you in units β€” a unit being one kilowatt-hour. The useful thing to know is that a handful of appliances account for most of your bill, and almost all of them heat something. Here is what each appliance actually draws, how many units a typical use costs you, and where the savings genuinely are.

The rule: heat is expensive, motors are cheap

Anything whose job is to make heat β€” a kettle, an iron, a water heater, a cooker plate β€” draws heavily. Anything whose job is to spin a motor β€” a blender, a fan, a vacuum β€” draws far less than people assume. A blender running for two minutes is not what moved your bill; a shower heater running for fifteen is.

Look at the top four rows and the fridge. That is your bill. Everything else is noise by comparison.

Where the savings actually are

1. Hot water β€” the biggest single line

An instant shower heater at 4,000 W is the most power-hungry thing most homes own. Cutting a fifteen-minute shower to eight roughly halves that use. If you have a geyser on a timer, heating for a set window rather than all day is the single largest saving available in most Kenyan homes.

2. Boil only what you need

A kettle draws the same whether it holds one cup or two litres β€” the difference is how long it runs. Filling a 2,000 W kettle to the top for one cup of tea, four times a day, wastes meaningful power over a month for no benefit.

3. Use a pressure cooker for anything slow

Beans, githeri and tough cuts on an open plate for two hours is roughly 3–4 units. The same food in a pressure cooker in 30–40 minutes is well under one. For households that cook beans weekly, this is the most effective appliance purchase available.

4. Iron in one session

Most of an iron's consumption is reaching temperature. Ironing five shirts across five mornings costs far more than ironing all five at once.

5. Look after the fridge

Your fridge is modest per hour but it never stops, which makes it a large annual total. Three things matter: keep the door closed and open it decisively; keep the coils at the back free of dust; and do not push it flush against a wall β€” it needs airflow to dump heat.

Gas versus electric for cooking

For most Kenyan households, gas is cheaper per meal for stovetop cooking, and electricity wins for short, targeted tasks. In practice the efficient kitchen uses both:

  • Gas for long simmering, ugali, large pots, and anything where you want instant heat control.
  • Electric kettle for boiling water β€” faster and more efficient than a pot on a ring.
  • Microwave for reheating single portions. Reheating one plate in a microwave costs a fraction of firing a full ring or oven.
  • Air fryer for small batches instead of a full oven. Heating a 2,300 W oven for two pieces of chicken is the definition of waste.
  • Electric pressure cooker for beans and tough meat.

A note on 240 V and imported appliances

Kenya runs 240 V at 50 Hz. If you buy an appliance abroad, check the plate before you plug it in:

  • 110 V-only appliances will not work here without a transformer, and a transformer sized for a heating appliance is expensive and inefficient.
  • Look for "100–240 V" on the rating plate β€” that is dual-voltage and safe to use with just a plug adapter.
  • Motor appliances rated 60 Hz only may run slower or hotter on our 50 Hz supply.
  • A plug adapter is not a voltage converter. This confusion destroys appliances.

Protecting appliances from the supply itself

Surges when power returns after an outage kill more appliances in Kenya than age does.

  • Unplug sensitive electronics during an outage rather than leaving them to meet the surge when it returns.
  • Use a surge-protected extension for televisions, decoders, routers and computers.
  • After a long outage, switch things back on one at a time rather than everything at once.
  • If your area has frequent deep voltage dips, a fridge is the appliance most worth protecting β€” compressors do not tolerate low voltage.
