Drying Clothes Indoors During the Long Rains

Between April and June, and again in November, drying laundry in Nairobi stops being a background task and becomes a daily problem. Clothes that take two days to dry are not just inconvenient — that is exactly how the musty smell gets into them permanently. Here is the setup that works when the sun does not appear.

Why clothes smell after drying indoors

The smell is bacteria growing on fabric that stayed damp for more than about eight hours. It is not about the detergent. Three things fix it: shorter drying time, moving air, and not leaving the washing sitting in the machine or basket before it goes up.

The rules that actually shorten drying time

  1. Spin twice. An extra spin cycle removes more water than an hour of hanging does.
  2. Space garments a hand's width apart. Overlapping clothes on a crowded rack is the single biggest cause of slow drying.
  3. Get air moving. A cracked window and a fan beat a closed room with a heater.
  4. Hang heavy items on the outer rails where air circulates most.
  5. Turn thick items — jeans, towels — halfway through.

Choosing a rack for the space you have

Situation What works
Balcony, full machine load Double-pole wheeled rack
Indoors, no balcony Multi-tier folding rack you can move to the window
Socks, underwear, delicates Hanging clip airer
Small flat, no floor space Wall-mounted retractable rack

Wheels matter more than people expect — being able to follow the sun across a balcony, then roll the rack indoors before the evening dew, is worth more than an extra rail.

The basket is part of the system

Wet laundry sitting in a solid plastic basket for an hour starts the smell before it ever reaches the rack. Use a ventilated or woven basket for wet clothes, and keep a separate one for dry. A Rattan Laundry and Multipurpose Basket breathes; a closed hamper does not.

Ironing damp is not a shortcut

Ironing clothes that are still damp seals moisture into the fibres and the smell comes back in the wardrobe. If something has to be worn today, finish drying it properly with airflow, then iron.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my clothes smell after drying indoors?

They stayed damp too long. Spin twice, space garments out and get air moving — the smell is bacteria, not detergent.

How far apart should clothes hang on a rack?

About a hand's width. Overlapping garments can double the drying time.

Is a fan better than a heater for drying laundry?

Usually yes. Moving air carries moisture away; a heater in a closed room just makes humid warm air.

Can I dry clothes in the bedroom?

It is the worst room for it — the moisture ends up in the mattress and curtains. If you have no choice, open a window and use a fan.
