Mattress Hygiene: Dust Mites, Sunlight and Vacuums

A mattress that has never been cleaned is carrying years of skin cells, dust and — if anyone in the house wakes up congested — dust mites feeding on all of it. You cannot wash a mattress, which is why the handheld mite vacuum exists. Here is what it does, what it does not, and how often to use it.

What actually lives in a mattress

  • Skin cells. The food source for everything else.
  • Dust mites. Microscopic, harmless to most people and a genuine trigger for others — morning sneezing and blocked noses are the usual signs.
  • Dust and fabric fibres, worked deep into the surface by sleeping on it.
  • Moisture. An adult loses a surprising amount of water overnight, which is why a mattress in a humid room needs airing.

Why a normal vacuum is not enough

A floor vacuum has suction but the wrong head — it glides over fabric without disturbing what is held in it. Mite vacuums add two things: a patting or beating action that loosens debris out of the weave, and a UV lamp. The Cordless UV Handheld Mite Vacuum, 10kPa is built for mattresses, sofas and carpets specifically.

A realistic cleaning routine

How often What to do
Weekly Strip the bed, open the windows, let the mattress air for an hour
Monthly Vacuum the mattress surface and both sides of the pillows
Every 3 months Rotate the mattress head to foot; vacuum the sofa too
Immediately Blot spills — never soak a mattress, it will not dry through

Protectors do more than vacuums

The honest hierarchy: a waterproof mattress protector prevents the problem, a mite vacuum manages it. Protectors take the sweat and spills that would otherwise sink in, and they go through the washing machine weekly. If you buy one thing, buy the protector.

Sofas and carpets have the same problem

Fabric sofas collect exactly what mattresses do, and in most Kenyan sitting rooms they get more daily use than the bed. The same handheld unit handles them. For spills and stains rather than dust, a spot sofa and carpet cleaner deals with the marks a vacuum cannot lift, and a 3-in-1 cordless vacuum covers floors, upholstery and the car.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I vacuum my mattress?

Monthly for most homes, fortnightly if anyone in the house has allergies or asthma.

Does a UV mite vacuum really work?

The suction and patting action remove the dust and skin cells mites feed on, which is what reduces them. Treat UV as a supporting feature, not the main event.

Can I wash a mattress?

No. It will not dry through and damp foam grows mould. Blot spills, vacuum, air it, and use a washable protector.

How long does a mattress last?

Seven to ten years for good foam. If you wake with back pain that eases during the day, or there is a visible dip, it is done.
