How to Hang Mirrors So a Room Looks Bigger
A mirror is the cheapest way to make a small Kenyan flat feel larger, but only if it is hung where it has something worth reflecting. A mirror facing a blank wall doubles the blank wall. Facing a window, it doubles the daylight β and that is the whole trick.
The rule: reflect light or depth, never clutter
Before you hang anything, stand where the mirror will go and look at what is opposite. If it is a window, a doorway into another room, or a well-styled shelf, the mirror will work. If it is the back of a sofa or a cluttered dining table, move it.
Size by wall, not by preference
| Where | Mirror size that works |
|---|---|
| Above a console or sideboard | Two-thirds the width of the furniture |
| Hallway or narrow corridor | Tall and slim β 150 Γ 40cm |
| Bedroom dressing corner | Full length, floor-standing or wall-fixed |
| Small sitting room feature wall | Round, 60β80cm, centred |
In a corridor the Slim Metal Frame Full Length Mirror 150 x 40cm gives you a dressing mirror without eating the walking space.
Height: hang for the people, not the wall
- Full-length mirrors: about 20β30cm off the floor, so a whole outfit fits in frame.
- Above furniture: leave 15β20cm between the top of the console and the bottom of the frame.
- Decorative round mirrors: centre at about 150cm, which is roughly eye level for most adults.
Fixing a mirror safely in a Kenyan flat
Concrete or block walls need a masonry drill and proper plugs β a nail will not hold a framed mirror. In a rental where drilling is not an option, a floor-standing or leaning mirror is the safer route; lean it at a slight angle and secure the top to the wall with a small anchor if there are children in the house.
Mirrors in the bedroom
Many Kenyan households prefer not to have a large mirror facing the bed directly. If that is you, a dressing table with its own mirror β like the Makeup Dressing Table with Large Mirror and Storage Drawers β keeps the mirror on a side wall and gives you the surface at the same time. A wardrobe with a full-length mirror on the door hides it completely when the door is closed.
Frequently asked questions
Where should a mirror go to make a room look bigger?
Opposite or adjacent to a window, so it reflects daylight and the view rather than a blank wall.
How high should a full-length mirror be hung?
Bottom edge 20β30cm from the floor. Any higher and you cannot see your shoes.
What size mirror above a console table?
About two-thirds the width of the console, with 15β20cm of clear wall between them.
Can I hang a heavy mirror without drilling?
Not safely. On a concrete wall use a masonry drill and plugs; in a rental where drilling is banned, choose a leaning floor mirror instead.
