Choosing a Small Fridge for a Bedsitter or Office

In a bedsitter or a single room, the fridge is usually the largest appliance you will own, and the one most often bought wrong. The question is not how many litres you want — it is how many litres will fit with the door fully open and the back breathing.

Measure three things before you buy

  1. The footprint, plus 5–10cm clearance at the back and sides for airflow. A fridge pushed flat against a wall runs hotter and costs more to run.
  2. The door swing. A 95-litre fridge needs about 60cm of clear floor in front to open fully. Check which side the hinge is on.
  3. The route in. Doorways, staircases and corridors in older Nairobi flats are narrower than you think.

What 95 litres actually holds

Item Roughly
2-litre bottles / juice 4–6 in the door
Milk, eggs, margarine All of it, one shelf
Vegetables and dhania The crisper drawer
Leftovers in containers One shelf, stacked
Frozen A small chiller box — ice and a little meat, not a week's stock

A SmartPro 95 Litre Single Door Fridge is the size that fits under or beside a counter in a bedsitter and still takes a week's shopping for one or two people. What it does not do is freeze in bulk — a single-door chiller compartment is for ice and short-term storage.

Running it cheaply

  • Keep it away from the cooker and out of direct sun. A fridge working against heat runs constantly.
  • Leave the back clear. The coils shed heat; block them and the compressor never rests.
  • Do not put hot food in. Cool it on the counter first.
  • Keep it reasonably full. A full fridge holds its temperature better than an empty one — bottles of water do the job.
  • Defrost the chiller when ice passes about 5mm. Ice is an insulator, not a help.

Organising a small fridge

Small fridges get chaotic fast because there are no zones. Clear stackable bins fix it: one for dairy, one for leftovers, one for vegetables you want to see. Fridge organisers effectively add a shelf without adding height, and mean the thing at the back gets eaten instead of forgotten. Produce that does not belong in a fridge at all — onions, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas — should go on a vegetable rack instead.

Frequently asked questions

What size fridge is right for a bedsitter?

Around 90–120 litres suits one or two people. Check the door swing and back clearance before the capacity.

How much space does a fridge need behind it?

At least 5–10cm at the back and sides. The coils need to shed heat or the compressor runs continuously.

Can a single-door fridge freeze food?

Only in the small chiller compartment — ice and short-term storage. It is not a substitute for a freezer.

Does a full fridge use less power?

Yes, within reason. Contents hold the cold between door openings. Fill gaps with bottles of water if it is half empty.
