Wall Lights With No Rewiring: Plug-In and Battery Options

Wall lights change a room more than any other fitting because they light at eye level instead of from above — but most people assume they mean chasing cables through plaster. In practice, most Kenyan homes already have wall points that are unused or badly placed, and an E27 fitting will take whatever bulb you already buy.

Why wall light beats ceiling light in the evening

A ceiling light puts everything directly below it in shadow: faces, sofas, the dining table. Wall lights throw light sideways across a room, which is what makes a sitting room feel warm after dark. The usual advice is two or three light sources in a room at different heights, and a wall light is the easiest second one.

E27 fittings: use the bulb you already know

An E27 fitting is the standard screw bulb used in most Kenyan homes. It means the fitting does not dictate your light — you do. Options like the Vintage Wall Light with Grey Shade and Gold Frame take a warm bulb for a sitting room or a brighter one for a stairwell.

Room Bulb colour Why
Sitting room, bedroom Warm white (2700–3000K) Relaxing, flattering, feels like evening
Kitchen, study Cool white / daylight (4000K+) Shows detail, keeps you alert
Hallway, stairs Either, on the brighter side Safety first, atmosphere second

Integrated LED fittings: fixed light, less fuss

Integrated LED wall lights have the light source built in, so there is no bulb to buy and the profile is much slimmer. The trade-off is that the colour is decided for you. Tri-colour models solve that — the Tri-Colour Triangular LED Wall Light and the Gold Crystal LED Wall Light 18W Tri-Colour switch between warm, neutral and daylight on the same fitting.

Where to put them

  1. Beside the bed at about 150cm from the floor, so the light falls on a book rather than in your eyes.
  2. Either side of a mirror, never above it — side lighting removes the shadows overhead light creates.
  3. Along a corridor at 160–180cm, spaced two to three metres apart.
  4. Up a stairwell, positioned so the light lands on the treads.

Getting it fitted safely

Wall lights are a wired fitting: use an electrician, and have them on a switched circuit rather than spliced into a socket. Confirm whether your wall is concrete or plasterboard before buying — fixings differ, and a heavy fitting on a plasterboard wall needs proper anchors.

Frequently asked questions

What does E27 mean?

It is the standard screw bulb fitting used in most Kenyan homes, so you can fit whatever bulb brightness and colour you prefer.

Warm white or daylight for a sitting room?

Warm white, 2700–3000K. Daylight bulbs make an evening sitting room feel like an office.

How high should a wall light be fitted?

About 150cm beside a bed, 160–180cm in a corridor, and level with eye height beside a mirror.

Do tri-colour LED lights need a special switch?

No. They usually cycle through the colour temperatures using the existing wall switch or a small controller on the fitting.
