Four brushes in different shapes, because no single brush reaches everything: a broad one for tiles and tubs, a narrow one for taps and drains, a stiff one for grout, and a small one for the corners where a cloth simply folds over. Stiff bristles and quick-drying handles mean they rinse clean rather than staying damp and sour in a bucket.

Buying guide
Keep the bathroom brushes and the kitchen brushes separate — mark the handles if you have to. Rinse each brush under hot water after use and hang it to dry rather than leaving it in a bucket, which is how brushes start to smell. Replace any brush whose bristles have splayed, since a soft brush spreads dirt rather than lifting it.
How it compares
Against a cloth or sponge, brushes reach into grout lines and tap bases that a flat surface cannot. Against a single all-purpose brush, four shapes mean you stop forcing the wrong tool into a tight corner. Against electric scrubbers, these cost a fraction and need no charging — they just need effort.
