Black Marble and Acacia Wood Paddle Cutting Board and Serving Tray, 2kg, 34.9 × 18.5cm — WIMU Kitchen Nairobi

Black Marble and Acacia Woo...

This marble and acacia wood board is a two-in-one cutting board and serving tray that looks as good on the dining table as it does on the counter. Black marble-effect stone panels sit either side of a warm acacia wood centre strip, finished with a paddle handle and a hanging hole. At about 2kg, it is heavy enough to stay put while you slice bread, cheese, fruit or cured meats, and the cool stone surface is ideal for butter and pastry. Measuring roughly 34.9 × 18.5cm, it is a comfortable size for a snack platter for two to four, a cheese and crackers spread when friends come over, or nyama choma sliced and carried straight to the table. It photographs beautifully, which makes it a favourite for hosts and a thoughtful housewarming or wedding gift. Hang it on the kitchen wall by its handle when not in use and it doubles as décor.

Buying guide

Use this board mainly for serving and light cutting such as bread, cheese, fruit and charcuterie. Stone is hard on knife edges, so for heavy daily chopping of onions and sukuma keep a separate wooden or plastic board and save this one for presentation. Hand-wash with mild soap and warm water, then dry straight away; do not soak it, as standing water can make the wood swell or crack. Rub a little food-safe mineral oil into the wood strip every few weeks to keep it rich in colour. Wipe acidic spills such as lemon juice or wine off the marble quickly to protect the finish. Store it flat or hanging by its handle.

How it compares

An all-wood board is lighter and kinder to knives, while a plastic board is cheaper and easier to bleach. This marble and acacia board is heavier and more decorative, staying firmly in place and looking smart enough to serve from, so it works best as a serving board that also handles light slicing rather than as your everyday chopping board.
