Candles and Tablescaping: Getting the Height Right
Candlelight is the cheapest upgrade a dining table can get, and the most commonly botched. The rule that fixes most of it: candle flames should sit either below eye level or well above it — never at it. A flame directly across from someone's eyes is a headache, not ambience.
Height, and why it matters
Seated eye level at a dining table is roughly 110–120cm from the floor, which means about 35–40cm above the tabletop. Taper candles in tall holders should clear that; tealights and pillars should sit well under it. A 3 Piece Clear Glass Candle Holder Set at 20cm, 23cm and 25cm works because the staggered heights create movement while staying below the sightline.
Building a tablescape in four layers
- Base: a runner or placemats. This defines the zone everything else sits in.
- Height: candles and one low arrangement, down the centre line.
- Texture: wood, glass and ceramic together — three materials is the sweet spot.
- Edit: take one thing away. Almost every table is over-dressed by one object.
Scented or unscented at the table?
| Where | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dining table | Unscented | Scent competes with the food |
| Living room | Scented | Sets the mood, nothing to clash with |
| Bathroom | Scented, small | Small room, a little goes far |
| Bedroom | Diffuser instead | Nothing burning where people sleep |
For a bedroom or a room you leave unattended, a Volcano Aromatherapy Diffuser and Humidifier with Timer gives scent with no flame, and the timer means it shuts itself off.
Everyday, not just occasions
The mistake is saving all of this for Christmas or a visit. A runner, two candles and a bowl left permanently on the table takes ten minutes to set up and changes how the room reads every evening. Clear it for meals, put it back after — that is the whole routine.
Frequently asked questions
How tall should dining table candles be?
Either below 35cm above the tabletop or clearly above seated eye level. Never level with people's eyes.
Should dining candles be scented?
No — scent competes with food. Keep scented candles and diffusers for the living room and bathroom.
How many candles on a table?
Three in staggered heights for a small table, or pairs spaced evenly down a long one. Odd groupings look composed.
What is the safest option with children in the house?
An electric diffuser or enclosed glass holders. Never leave an open flame in a room you are not in.
