Styling Vases: The Neck Does All the Work

Most vases in Kenyan living rooms are the wrong shape for what goes in them. A vase is not a container — it is a support structure, and the neck does the work. Get the neck right and even a handful of stems from the garden looks arranged.

The neck decides the arrangement

Shape Holds Works because
Narrow neck, tall body Single tall stems, dried grasses Grips the stems upright without support
Wide mouth, round body Full bouquets Lets stems fan out naturally
Straight cylinder Structural stems, branches Stems stand where you put them
Bud vase One or two stems Nothing to arrange — it cannot look wrong

If you own one vase, make it a straight-sided glass cylinder — it takes anything. A 28cm Creative Glass Vase with Metallic Stand adds height without adding fuss, which is what a low coffee table needs.

Odd numbers, and the height rule

  1. Group in odd numbers. Three vases of different heights read as a composition; two read as a mistake.
  2. Stems should be about 1.5× the vase height. Shorter looks stunted, much taller topples.
  3. Vary the height, keep the material. Three glass vases at three heights look deliberate. Three materials at one height look like leftovers.
  4. Leave one empty. A good vase is an object in its own right.

When fresh flowers are not practical

Fresh stems need changing weekly, which most households do not keep up. Artificial stems have improved enormously, and the ones that read as real are the ones with visible stem texture and slightly irregular leaves. A 150cm Artificial Cherry Blossom with Vase and Pebbles or an Artificial Olive Plant with Vase and Pebbles comes already balanced and weighted — the pebbles are doing structural work, not just decoration.

Where to put them

  • Console or entryway table: one tall arrangement, nothing else competing.
  • Coffee table: low only. Anything above eye level when seated blocks conversation.
  • Dining table: below 30cm, or move it at mealtimes.
  • Floor corner: a 150cm+ stem arrangement fills dead space no furniture fits.

Keeping glass vases clear

Cloudy glass ruins the effect. Fill with warm water, add a spoonful of rice and a squeeze of lemon, swirl hard, and the rice scours the inside where a brush will not reach. Rinse and dry upside down.

Frequently asked questions

How tall should flowers be in a vase?

Roughly one and a half times the vase height. Shorter looks stunted; much taller becomes unstable.

How do I clean a cloudy glass vase?

Warm water, a spoonful of uncooked rice and lemon juice, swirled hard. The rice scrubs where a brush cannot reach.

How many vases should I group together?

Three, at different heights, in the same material. Odd numbers read as composed; pairs read as accidental.

Do artificial plants look cheap?

The bad ones do. Look for visible stem texture, matte leaves and irregular shapes — shine and perfect symmetry are the giveaways.
