Kitchen Pests: Ants, Weevils and Cockroaches

Ants, cockroaches and weevils are not a hygiene verdict — they are a warm climate doing what it does. You control them by removing three things: food, water and shelter. Spraying without doing that is a treadmill, because the next colony arrives within days.

Ants: follow the trail, do not just wipe it

Ants scout, find food, then lay a chemical trail that recruits the whole column. Killing the ants you can see does nothing about the trail or the nest.

  1. Find where they enter — follow the line to a crack, a window frame, a pipe entry or a gap under the door.
  2. Wipe the trail with soapy water or vinegar. This destroys the chemical marker, which is why the column disperses afterwards.
  3. Seal the entry point. Filler, sealant or steel wool in a pipe gap.
  4. Remove the attraction: sugar, honey, open fruit, pet food, a sticky counter, a damp cloth left out.
  5. Keep containers off the wall so trails are visible rather than hidden behind the flour.
  6. Use bait rather than spray if they persist — bait is carried back to the nest, spray only kills the foragers.

Sugar, honey and jam belong in sealed containers, not in their shop packaging with a folded corner. That single change ends most kitchen ant problems.

Weevils: they usually arrive in the packet

Weevils in your rice almost always came home with the rice. Eggs are already inside the grain when you buy it, and they hatch in your cupboard.

  • Freeze new bulk flour, rice or maize meal for 48 hours before decanting. This kills eggs and is the single most effective preventative step.
  • Decant on the day you buy, into airtight containers with a gasket seal — not a push-on lid.
  • Bay leaves, dried chilli or cloves in the container discourage them.
  • Never top up an old container with new stock. Empty it, wash it, dry it completely, then refill. Topping up is how one infested batch spreads through your whole store.
  • Buy in quantities you use within a couple of months. A large sack is only a saving if it survives.
  • If you find them: discard the affected container's contents, wash and thoroughly dry the container, and check every neighbouring container. They travel.

Cockroaches: water is the real attraction

Cockroaches can go a long time without food but not without water. A dripping tap or a damp cupboard sustains a population even in a spotless kitchen.

  • Fix leaks and dry the sink area at night. Wipe the sink dry before bed — it removes their water source during their active hours.
  • Do not leave washing-up overnight, and do not leave a wet cloth spread on the counter.
  • Empty bins nightly and use bins with lids.
  • Seal cracks and gaps behind cupboards, around pipes and along skirtings. Shelter matters as much as food.
  • Check what you bring in. Cardboard boxes and second-hand appliances are common arrival routes — unpack deliveries outside and discard the cardboard promptly.
  • Use gel bait in cracks rather than spraying open surfaces. Bait reaches where they live; surface spray does not.
  • Keep cardboard out of the kitchen. It is both shelter and food for them.

Storage that removes the food source

Store this Like this Because
Flour, rice, maize meal Airtight, gasket seal, dated Weevils; and packaging is not a barrier
Sugar, honey, jam Sealed, wiped clean outside The main ant attraction
Bread Bread bin, not an open shelf Ants and mould
Fruit Bowl, checked daily One over-ripe item starts a fruit fly cycle
Pet food Sealed container, not the bag Frequently the overlooked source
Onions and potatoes Ventilated, dark, off the floor Rot attracts flies and ants
Leftovers Sealed, refrigerated promptly Everything is attracted to these

Store containers off the floor and slightly away from the wall. It costs nothing and turns invisible trails into visible ones you can act on.

A weekly ten-minute routine

  1. Wipe inside the cupboard where dry goods live — crumbs accumulate under containers.
  2. Check the oldest container of flour or rice for movement.
  3. Wipe the outside of sugar and honey containers.
  4. Look behind and under the bin.
  5. Check under the sink for damp.
  6. Empty and dry the fruit bowl.
  7. Sweep the corners, not just the middle of the floor.

Ten minutes weekly prevents nearly everything that otherwise becomes a spraying campaign.

Coastal and rainy-season adjustments

  • Humidity accelerates everything. At the coast, double-bag or double-seal dry goods and check them more often.
  • The rains push insects indoors. Expect more activity and seal entry points before the season rather than during it.
  • Damp cupboards grow mould as well as attracting pests. Keep cardboard out and allow airflow.
  • Rodents seek shelter in wet weather. Seal gaps, store dry goods in hard containers rather than bags, and do not leave food out overnight.

When to call someone

Do it rather than escalating your own spraying if:

  • You see cockroaches during the day — that usually indicates a large established population.
  • You find droppings or gnawed packaging suggesting rodents.
  • The problem returns within days of thorough cleaning and sealing.
  • You share walls in a block — a neighbour's kitchen may be the source, and building-wide treatment is the only durable fix.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get rid of ants in the kitchen?

Follow the trail to the entry point, wipe the trail with soapy water or vinegar to destroy the chemical marker, seal the entry, and put sugar and honey in sealed containers. Use bait rather than spray if they persist.

Where do weevils come from?

Usually from the packet — eggs are already in the grain when you buy it. Freeze bulk flour and rice for 48 hours before decanting into airtight containers.

Why do I have cockroaches in a clean kitchen?

Water, not food. A dripping tap, damp under-sink cupboard or wet cloth left out will sustain them. Dry the sink area at night.

Is spray or bait better?

Bait. It is carried back to the nest or colony. Surface spray kills only what you see.

Can I still eat flour with weevils in it?

Discard the affected container's contents, wash and dry the container thoroughly, and check neighbouring containers — they spread.

Does cardboard attract pests?

Yes. It is both shelter and food for cockroaches. Unpack deliveries outside and keep cardboard out of the kitchen.

What is the single most effective step?

Airtight containers with gasket seals for all dry goods, sugar included. It removes the food source that everything else depends on.
