Shelf and Drawer Liners: Small Cost, Big Difference

Shelf liner is the least glamorous thing you can buy for a kitchen and one of the highest-return. It costs almost nothing, takes an afternoon, and it is the difference between wiping a shelf and replacing a cupboard. In a Kenyan kitchen, where oil and humidity do the damage, that matters more than it does elsewhere.

What liner actually prevents

  • Oil soaking into chipboard. Cupboard carcasses are usually MDF or chipboard with a thin melamine face. Once oil gets past a chip in that face, the board swells and never recovers.
  • Ring marks from bottles of oil, vinegar and sauces.
  • Sliding. Anti-slip liner stops jars migrating to the back every time a door closes.
  • Scratching from sufurias and cast iron dragged across a shelf.

Choosing the right liner for the shelf

Location Use
Under the sink, damp areas Waterproof EVA β€” drips sit on top and wipe off
Beside the cooker, oil zone Oil-proof, wipeable, easy to replace
Cutlery and utensil drawers Anti-slip, so the tray does not shift
Wardrobe and linen shelves Any liner β€” here it is about dust and snagging

A Geometric Anti-Slip Waterproof EVA Liner, 45 x 150cm handles the damp cupboards. For a whole kitchen in one go, the Marbled Oil-Proof Liner at 45 x 400cm has enough length to do every shelf from one roll.

Fitting it so it stays flat

  1. Empty and clean the shelf, then let it dry completely. Liner over damp traps the damp.
  2. Measure the shelf, not the roll, and cut about 5mm under the width so it does not curl up at the edges.
  3. Cut with a straight edge β€” a ruler and a sharp knife beat scissors for a line that does not wander.
  4. Lay from the back forward, smoothing as you go so no air is trapped.
  5. Do the drawers too, especially cutlery drawers where crumbs collect in the corners.

Replace it, do not scrub it

The point of liner is that it is disposable. When the strip beside the cooker gets past wiping, cut a new piece rather than attacking it with a scourer. Doing one shelf a month keeps the whole kitchen ahead of the grease without ever being a project.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need shelf liner?

If your cupboards are chipboard or MDF β€” which most are β€” yes. Oil that gets into the board swells it permanently.

What size liner should I buy?

45cm wide fits standard kitchen shelves. Buy length by adding up your shelves; a 400cm roll usually does a whole small kitchen.

How do I cut liner straight?

Mark it, then cut against a ruler with a sharp knife. Scissors wander on soft EVA.

Is liner washable?

EVA liner wipes clean with a damp cloth. When a piece is past wiping, cut a fresh one β€” it is meant to be replaced.
