White striped flat sheets in 5 by 6, 6 by 6 and 7 by 8. A flat sheet is the one that fits any mattress: no elastic to stretch out, no corner that pops off a deep pillow-top at 3am. Tuck it properly and it stays, which is exactly why hotels have never moved away from them.

Buying guide
Use hospital corners at the foot — fold, lift, tuck — and the sheet will not work loose overnight. Flat sheets suit thick or unusual mattresses where a fitted sheet strains. Iron only the top fold-over edge if you want the crisp hotel finish; the rest sits under a duvet anyway.
How it compares
Against a fitted sheet, a flat sheet fits any depth and takes a little more skill to make up. Against plain white, the woven stripe adds quiet texture. Against a full set, this is the piece to buy when your pillowcases and cover are still good.
