Airtight Storage Jars: Sizes, Seals and Weevil-Proofing
Flour goes stale, sugar clumps into a brick and rice grows weevils — all three problems have the same cause and the same fix. Humidity and air get into the packet, and a folded-over corner with a clothes peg is not a seal. Here is what to store in what, and the sizes that actually match Kenyan shopping.
Match the container to the shop pack
The most useful containers are the ones that hold exactly what you buy, so nothing is left over in a half-empty bag.
| What you buy | Container size |
|---|---|
| 2kg flour or sugar | 2.5–3L |
| 2kg rice | 2.5L |
| 5kg rice or maize flour | 6L or a dispenser |
| 10kg sack decanted | 10kg dispenser with a scoop |
| Tea, coffee, spices | 500ml–1L |
For the big sack, a 10kg Acrylic Airtight Rice and Cereal Container with Scoop gets it off the floor and away from weevils. For breakfast cereal, the 2L Cereal Container with Handle and Measuring Cup pours without a funnel.
Glass, acrylic or plastic?
- Glass — does not stain or hold odours, best for anything with turmeric, garlic or strong spice. Heavier and breakable. See the 1000ml Glass Canister with Airtight Lid and Bamboo Spoon.
- Acrylic — clear, light, does not shatter; scratches if you scour it. Good for counters and high shelves.
- Food-grade plastic with clip locks — cheapest per litre and stacks well for a whole pantry, like the 10 Piece Airtight Set with Measuring Cups and Labels.
The weevil routine
- Empty and dry the container completely before refilling. Moisture is what turns a sealed container into a problem.
- Never top up new grain onto old. That is how one infested bag contaminates months of supply.
- Freeze new flour or rice for 48 hours if you have had weevils before — it kills eggs that arrived in the packet.
- Check the seal. A lid that closes but does not compress a gasket is not airtight.
Labelling saves more than it looks
Uniform jars are only an improvement if you can tell them apart. Label the contents and the month you filled it — flour and cornflour look identical, and a jar you filled eight months ago is not the one to bake with. Sets that ship with labels, like the clip-lock and locking-lid ranges, remove the excuse.
Frequently asked questions
What size container for 2kg of flour?
2.5 to 3 litres. Flour takes up more volume than it looks, and you want headroom for a scoop.
Are clip-lock lids really airtight?
Ones with a silicone gasket are. A lid that simply snaps on without compressing a seal will let humidity in.
Can I keep rice in the original bag inside a container?
You can, but it defeats the seal. Decant the rice and keep the bag's label taped inside the lid if you want the details.
How do I stop sugar going hard?
An airtight seal and no moisture. If it has already set, break it up and store it with a dry piece of bread overnight, then remove the bread.
